Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and paddlesurfing evolved from the traditional form of lay down paddleboarding or kneeling paddleboarding (PRONE). Prone paddleboarding was originally executed in the open ocean to cross between islands, or to travel from one coastal town to another while riding unbroken swells. Nowadays, both prone and stand up paddleboarding is one of the fastest growing water sports worldwide. It can be performed on any body of water, from oceans to bays, rivers to lakes, and even wetlands. The choice is yours.

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a great cross training workout. Whatever level of fitness you
currently have, SUP will help you improve your fitness level.

It requires you to use muscles in your shoulders, upper back, spine and core. Many top triathletes now use it to improve their endurance, work on their core and combine a strength workout in one training session. Some consider it a remarkably efficient workout.

Even though some muscle groups work harder than others, SUP is definitely a full body workout, as every muscle is used at some point, legs and arms included.Because balance is so important, core stability is needed, and the more core strength you build, the better you’ll get. This requires an increase in focus, and some say this benefits your other day to day activities as well.

SUP is considered a low impact activity, so is less likely to damage tendons, ligaments and joints.

Runners and other athletes have found it useful when recovering from shin splints, knee and hip pain and other injuries. Regular SUP is definitely a way to improve your strength, cardio fitness and endurance levels. At first you’ll feel tired and have sore muscles, but the more regular your sessions, the sooner you will notice your overall fitness levels improve. As important as all this is, SUP is also a great way to reduce stress levels by being in the water, enjoying nature and the outdoors, and simply being in the moment. Engaging with nature is known to have a positive effect on mental health and attitude, and the water is especially calming in this regard.

All in all, the fitness benefits of SUP really stack up, no matter whether you’re new to the sport or an expert, or whether you’re starting on a low fitness base or a strong one. There’s definitely something in it for everyone.
